Hatfield Marine Science Center Summer Camps
Is your Science textbook uninteresting? Is taking a trip to an Aquarium not quite exciting enough? How about getting your hands wet and conducting research sound to you? From taking core samples in order to study the impact of the last tsunami, to constructing remotely operated vehicles, to conducting an autopsy on a seal, you will never be bored at a summer science camp through the Hatfield Marine Science Center.
Take your pick of one of these many exciting day camps:
- Dive Into Fish
How do fish communicate? What techniques do scientists use to study fish? You will learn the answers to these questions and more as we delve into the incredible world of fish! Campers ages 13-15 will learn what fish need to survive and how to set up and take care of an aquarium. We will investigate current fisheries research at Hatfield Marine Science Center and visit the Oregon Hatchery Research Center. Campers will learn how and why researchers collect data and even do some sampling of their own in this fascinating camp! - Ocean Explorations
Explore the ocean environment from the surface to the deep in this hands-on camp for 13-17 year olds. Campers will learn about technology and techniques used in ocean exploration and have the opportunity to design their own ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) for observation and data collection. Several fieldtrips, including one to the OSU Wave Energy lab will occur. - Animal Adaptations
This hands-on day camp will introduce campers to the plants and animals that live in the marine habitats of the central Oregon coast. With a different outdoor field adventure each day, campers will investigate life on the rocky shore, coastal forest, marsh, mudflat, and sandy beach. Participants will work in teams to collect live specimens and to build appropriate habitats in HMSC's wet labs. - From the River to the Sea
Campers will discover characteristics that help crustaceans survive by actively exploring tide pools and mudflats, collecting and observing plankton and creating a mini-exhibit about crustaceans. Participants will work directly with scientists to conduct research on crustaceans and will take part on one of HMSC's most popular activities: crab races. - Bayfront Quest
Campers will explore the estuary, rocky shore, sandy beach and the coastal forest. In teams, they will collect animals and build habitats in HMSC's wet labs, demonstrating their understanding of habitat and community. - Habitat Hunt
Our explorations will take us on a hunt for all the organisms that just can't live without each other. While exploring the rocky intertidal, estuary, sandy beach and the coastal forest of Cape Perpetua, campers will be introduced to the plants and animals that live in symbiotic relationships. Campers will also participate in a symbiotic scavenger hunt.
